EurActiv reported in August 2016 on the decision by Turkish authorities to cancel the EU-funded Jean Monnet scholarship for the 2016-2017 academic year, following the military coup attempt in July. According to media reports, the European Union regretted the decision, which was alledgedly taken without its involvement.

The Jean Monnet scholarship is aimed at helping cultivate pro-EU scholars in Turkey. It is considered as one of the most renowned programmes in the country for higher education students, having started in the 1990-1991 academic year.
