On the 26 July 2016, the European Commission decided to release German energy firm E.ON from commitments to reduce long-term booking on the German gas grid almost five years ahead of schedule. Because E.ON had started to reduce its long-term bookings of pipeline capacity, other companies had been able to enter in the German gas market. The commitments had resolved the competition problem even quicker than expected, as the commitments had been originally due to last until April 2021.
