Report and analysis of the results of the general election held in Spain on the 26 June 2016.

The conservative and ruling Popular Party (PP) won Spain’s repeat election held on the 26 June 2016, but still fell short of a governing majority. Their major challengers the Socialists (PSOE) came second, despite predictions that they will fall behind the recently created leftist coalition of Unidos Podemos. The new centrist Ciudadanos Party came in fourth place.

Analysts suggested the outcome was inconclusive and would not necessarily resolve the political deadlock since the original election in December 2015.

By late July 2016 there had been intermittent discussions between party leaders by no clear pattern had emerged of which political party / parties could form a viable government. King Felipe VI met with representatives from all the parties with a presence in Congress in the week beginning the 25 July 2016 to analyse the situation.

Commentators suggested that a third general election in close succession might be needed in November 2016 to try and resolve the impasse.
