Pavel Sheremet, a pro-Western journalist, was killed by a car bomb on 20 July 2016 in Kyiv. He worked for a news site whose founder had been beheaded after probing the alleged crimes of Ukrainian leaders. Mr Sheremet was a Russian national originally from Belarus, from which he was ejected. Commentators noted that over the previous two years, Ukraine had experienced an unprecedented spiral of political killings and human rights abuses, most of which remained unresolved or even completely ignored by the Ukrainian government. The EU said in Statement: 'Such attacks are unacceptable and a swift and transparent investigation must be carried out to bring those responsible for this crime to justice. The European Union stands alongside the Ukrainian authorities in upholding the freedoms of expression and of the media, and will continue to work to protect journalists in their essential, professional work'. |
