On the 18 July 2016, the Council of the European Union adopted conclusions on Turkey. The European Union condemned the attempted coup of the 15 July 2016 and underlined the need to respect democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms as Turkey is a candidate country and a key partner for the European Union.
