Europeans surrender control of climate initiative to Bloomberg

The European Commission and the former mayor on New York, Michael Bloomberg, agreed in June 2016 to merge their initiatives to encourage cities across the world to reduce greenhouse emissions and mitigate the effects of the climate change.

The fusion of the European Union's Convenant of Mayors and Mr Bloomberg's Compact of Mayors was set to create a global Convenant of Mayors, an alliance of 7,500 cities representing over 600 million inhabitants.

The EU's initiative had been launched in 2014.
