Wages would be £38 a week lower and manufacturing would fall into steep decline if Britain voted to leave the EU, according to a new report – Better Off In: working people and the case for remaining in the EU – launched on the 1 June 2016 by the Trades Union Congress (TUC). Speaking at an event to launch the report, TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady set out the negative impact Brexit would have on wages, jobs, and rights at work. Separately, in a letter published in The Guardian on the 6 June 2016 10 leaders of the largest UK trade unions, including Unite, Unison, the GMB and Usdaw, said they were clear that the social and cultural benefits of remaining in the EU far outweighed any advantages of leaving, while acknowledging it needed to change and 'move away from a path of austerity'. |
