The Council of the European Union adopted on 26 May 2016 its general approach on a proposal aimed at boosting broadband services.

According to the draft law, the 700 MHz band, which offers high speeds and extensive coverage, would be made available for wireless broadband in the European Union by 2020. Broadcasting services would keep priority in the sub-700 MHz band until 2030.

Once the European Parliament adopted its position, the Council would start negotiations towards an agreement on the draft law's text.
