However the United Kingdom votes in the EU referendum in June 2016, it would be neither possible nor desirable to ‘unplug’ the UK from Europe’s energy networks. The UK’s energy market is deeply integrated with that of its European neighbours, so the forthcoming referendum on its membership of the EU has major implications for energy and climate policy. In this Chatham House Research Report published in May 2016 the authors conclude that 'In the field of energy and climate change policy, remaining in the EU offers the best balance of policy options for Britain’s national interests'. |
