In a report 'The UK's relationship with the European Union' Allie Renison, Head of Europe and Trade Policy - IoD, explored what business really thought of the EU - and why?

As the prospect of a referendum on the UK’s continued EU membership turned from remote possibility to a certainty, the debate over what business thinks had increased in intensity. In 1975, there was by comparison virtually no debate – the business community was almost unequivocal in its support for staying in the Common Market.

Fast forward 40 years and divisions are more apparent, thanks in no small part to the rise of European integration across a host of other areas that have had a detrimental impact on enterprise and industry – the European Union is now far more than just a Common Market.
