King Felipe VI initiated the proceedings on the 26 April 2016 for the dissolution of parliament after a final attempt to form a coalition government failed. On the 3 May 2016 the King dissolved Parliament and called for a new election on the 26 June 2016. Podemos leader Pablo Iglesias outlined a new strategy whereby his party would create an election alliance with political forces further to the Left. A preliminary agreement to this effect was announced on the 9 May 2016, whereby Podemos and the leftist federation United Left (IU / Izquierda Unida). This might have the potential to allow Podemos to become the official opposition and ahead of the Socialists (PSOE) |
