The European Parliament's plenary session approved on 12 May 2016 a non-binding resolution calling again for country of origin labelling for meat and milk to be made mandatory.

MEPs argued that mandatory labelling would help improve consumer confidence in food products by making the food supply chain more transparent.

In February 2015, the parliament had already urged the European commission to come up with legislative proposals on this issue, but the EC cited the costs of mandatory country of origin labelling for not having put forward any proposal.
