The European Commission decided on 28 April 2016 to refer the Netherlands to the Court of Justice of the European Union for failing to comply with EU legislation applicable to rail transport.

The Commission issued two separate referrals to the Court, concerning EU railway safety on the one hand and railway interoperability on the other hand.
