Summary: Europe’s answer to the refugee crisis has so far been to intensify existing policies and practices, conveniently overlooking their role in the genesis of the problem and in demeaning the rule of law in its member states. The author considers modes of repatriation used by the Italian authorities to deport a group of Nigerian refugees and questions whether these authorities, and even Frontex, were involved in a violation of fundamental rights by undertaking a 'mass expulsion' which would be prohibited by Article 19 Charter of Fundamental Rights. |
