The UK’s ‘new settlement’ in the European Union: Renegotiation and referendum

This analysis takes stock of the renegotiation of the United Kingdom's membership of the European Union ahead of the UK’s referendum on 23 June 2016 on whether it should remain a member of the EU. It covers the background leading up to the UK’s decision to renegotiate its relationship with the EU and presents the concerns raised by the UK Prime Minister as well as the agreement reached at the
European Council on 18-19 February 2016. It looks ahead to the forthcoming referendum campaign and the possible next steps in the event of a vote by the UK either to stay or to leave the EU.
