In an interview with ITV News on 20 January 2016, Vatican's foreign minister Archbishop Paul Gallagher voiced hope that the United Kingdon would stay in the European Union following a referendum on the country's membership.

It was also reported in January that American multinational investment banking firm Goldman Sachs had agreed to donate a 'substantial six-figure sum' to Britain Stronger In Europe, a campaign to keep Britain in the European Union.
