Russia's gas gompany Gazprom demanded on 19 January 2016 some $2.5 billion (€2.28 billion) for Ukraine allegedly breaching its supply contract.

In a statement, Gazprom said that under the terms of its deal with Ukraine state firm Naftogaz, the country would have had to purchase a minimum annual amount of gas, or face a penalty. It also revealed that supplies had fallen short of the required level in the third quarter of 2015.
