On 20 January 2016 the European Commission announced €29 million, for the whole year, in humanitarian support for the most vulnerable populations in Somalia. The new funding came as nearly five million people were in need of humanitarian assistance (food, health services, water, sanitation and hygiene, shelter, protection and education in emergencies) and over one million people remained displaced inside the country.
