The European Parliament plenary session approved a resolution on 17 December 2015 defending more parliamentary oversight and public debate to ensure democratic accountability regarding the European Commission's proposal for completing the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU).

The chamber considered this proposal to be insufficient to address shortcomings in the institutional framework of the Eurozone and called for bigger intervention from the parliament as a way of getting citizens on board with the project.
