The European Parliament plenary session approved on 16 December 2015 a resolution calling for the European Union to immediately start monitoring threats to democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights in Hungary.

The chamber urged the European Commission to assess whether the combined effect of government measures there had led to a 'systemic deterioration', which, if the Commission fails to address it, could trigger similar developments in other member states too.

This assessment would be within the rule of law framework adopted by the EC in March 2014.
