At a press conference held on the 5 November 2015, Sweden's Migration Minister Morgan Johansson told reporters that there was no longer a guarantee that all asylum seekers could be offered emergency accommodation in Sweden. The country was struggling to provide enough beds for the record number of refugees crossing into the country from Germany and elsewhere. Over 100,000 people had sought asylum in Sweden in 2015 up to the end of October. This is more than ever before. Since summer 2015, the number of asylum seekers has risen sharply and in October 2015 the Swedish Migration Agency registered over 9,000 asylum seekers per week. Sweden's Prime Minister Stefan Löfven released a written statement on the 4 November 2015 calling on the European Commission to push other member states to do more to help tackle the refugee crisis. Sweden would ask the European Commission to take some of the migrants by relocating them to other countries in the EU. EurActiv reported a debate within government departments within Sweden as to the implications of switching some funds earmarked for Sweden's development aid policy to support for refugees being resettled within Sweden. |
