On 9 October 2015, on the European and World Day against the Death Penalty, the Council of Europe and the European Union reaffirmed their strong opposition to capital punishment.

The Council of Europe and the European Union urged all European States to ratify the protocols to the European Convention on Human Rights which aim at the abolition of the death penalty.
