A group of 19 tech companies names European Data Coalition published on 24 September 2015 a list of 'red lines' the data protection regulation (GDPR) being prepared by the European Union risked overstepping.

The coalition called for provisions that restrict data requests to authorities in other countries to be taken out of the regulation. The group also criticised the proposed measures on sanctions for companies that break data privacy rules as too strict.

Negotiations between the Council of the European Union, the European Commission and the European Parliament on the GDPR started in June 2015. Separately, the European Commission launched its Digital Single Market (DSM) strategy in May 2015, which the coalition said might be threathened by the limitations of the draft proposal on data protection.
