The first Syrian refugees to be provided shelter in the United Kingdom following the announcement by the government it was expanding the refugee protection scheme arrived in September 2015. Prime minister David Cameron discussed the refugee crisis in Europe with France's president François Hollande on 22 September, agreeing that the European Union should focus in helping Syria's neighbouring countries which host millions of refugees, ahead of an informal meeting of the EU leaders on the following day. The 20,000 refugees the UK announced to be prepared to host come from these refugee centres in countries like Lebanon and Jordan. The country decided not to take part in the EU-wide agreement to relocate 120,000 refugees arriving in Europe, making use of its opt-out on the topic. During summer in 2015, the UK and France were hit by a wave of refugees and migrants reaching the coastal town of Calais, which hosts the connection between the countries. |
