Press Release: Judgment in Case C-196/13. Commission v Italy

The European Court of Justice ordered Italy to pay financial penalties for failing to comply with a 2007 judgment of the Court establishing failure to fulfil obligations under the waste directives.

In addition to a lump sum of €40 million, the Court required Italy, until the 2007 judgment is complied with in full, to make a penalty payment of €42 800 000 for each six month period of delay.

EurActiv reported in September 2015 that, six months after the judgement, only 13 out of the 198 illegal landfills had been brought up to code.
