Media reports confirmed in September 2015 that a strain of Xylella fastidiosa pathogen present in one of Italy's regions did not affect grapevines, following tests carried out by the University of Bari and the National Research Council of Italy (CNR). This meant the removal of the ban on the commercialisation of plants from the area.

European and Italian authorities expressed their concerns throughout 2015 over the spread of Xylella fastidiosa bacteria beyond Italy, where it had severely damaged olive trees.
