The European Parliament approved in plenary on 8 September 2015 an amended version of the European Commission's proposal to ban animal cloning. Amendments were made by its members to include the cloning of all farm animals, their descendants and products derived from them, including imports into the European Union.

The amended text converts the legal text into a regulation, which has to be applied directly in all member states, rather than a directive, which would require further national legislation.

The EP rapporteurs were scheduled to start negotiations with the European Commission and the Council of the European Union to shape the final version of the draft law.
