The Home Office announced on the 25 August 2015 that illegal migrants would face a jail sentence for working in the United Kingdom, under measures to be included in a new Immigration Bill in the autumn of 2015. UK Immigration Minister James Brokenshire said: Anyone who thinks the UK is a soft touch should be in no doubt — if you are here illegally, we will take action to stop you from working, renting a flat, opening a bank account or driving a car'. The measures were seen in the context of the threat of large numbers of immigrants coming to British tempted by perceived generous welfare benefits, flourishing back economy and lax identity procedures. |
