On 15 April 2015, the European Commission had sent Google a Statement of Objections (SO), alleging the company had abused its dominant position in the markets for general internet search services in the European Economic Area (EEA) by systematically favouring its own comparison shopping product in its general search results pages. The Commission's preliminary view was that such conduct infringes EU antitrust rules because it stifles competition and harms consumers. Google gave its formal response on the 27 August 2015. It said 'We believe that the SO's preliminary conclusions are wrong as a matter of fact, law, and economics' and 'that Google increases choice for European consumers and offers valuable opportunities for businesses of all sizes.' A European Commission spokesman said 'it would carefully consider Google’s response before taking any decision on how to proceed and do not want to prejudge the final outcome of the investigation'. |
