Report: Chancellor Angela Merkel mulling fourth term in office

A report published in Der Spiegel on the 1 August 2015 suggested that German Chancellor Angela Merkel had plans to run in the next federal elections in 2017. Merkel, often called the world's most powerful woman, has been Chancellor of Germany since 2005.

In addition, EurActiv reported on the 3 August 2015 of an opinion poll in Germany which showed that if an election was held now the CDU/CSU could gain an absolute majority.
