Kristian Jensen, the Danish foreign affairs minister, told his German counterpart on 30 June 2015 that Denmark's government planned to reimpose border controls while sticking to the rules of the European Union’s open-border Schengen agreement.

According to the foreign ministry, the decision was aimed at combatting illegal immigration and smuggling. However, it was reported to have raised broader concerns about internal freedom of movement rules in the EU.

The new centre-right government in Denmark took office in June 2015, in the wake of the Danish People's Party's increased influence following the election result.
