More than 50 UK Conservative MPs formed a group called Conservatives for Britain (CfB) in June 2015 to put pressure on Prime Minister David Cameron to demand more in his negotiations to reform the UK's relationship with the EU. The MPs warned that unless Mr Cameron got radical change to the relationship with Europe, they will campaign for a No vote in the referendum due by 2017. However, speaking at the G7 summit in Germany on the 7 June 2015 David Cameron said he was confident he could secure sufficient reforms but indicated that ministers who did not support him would have to resign. He said 'the government isn't neutral in this. We have a clear view: renegotiate, get a deal that's in Britain's interest and then recommend Britain stays in it'. (Mr Cameron said on the 8 June 2015 that his comments had been misinterpreted - that he had been calling for ministerial backing during the negotiations, not the vote itself). Also at the G7 summit US President Obama declared he wanted Britain to stay in the EU. British foreign secretary Philip Hammond said on 9 June 2015 the government would not spend large amounts of public money to back any one side of the campaign before the referendum takes place. |
