How new European Commission proposals could shape Europe’s audiovisual media services

The European Commission recently launched a public consultation on Europe’s audiovisual media rules. Sally Broughton Micova assesses the proposals associated with the consultation, arguing that civil society should contribute ideas on how to promote independence of media regulators.

On 6 July 2015 the European Commission launched a public consultation as part of the 'Regulatory fitness' test of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD). This is a big moment: concrete policy options for an overhaul of European media regulation are on the table for the first time since 2007.
