The European Parliament passed a resolution on 20 May 2015 in which it said the European Union should take effective measures to prevent the spread of Xylella fastidiosa bacteria beyond Italy, where it was severely damaging olive trees. MEPs welcomed EU import restrictions on plants from affected areas in third countries but also said more might be needed. They also urged that growers be compensated for their losses, and suggested stepping up funding for research to combat the bacteria, which may attack other plants. |
