The European Commission announced on the 18 June 2014 that a plan to extend maternity leave for pregnant workers was one of five bills that would not be retabled in the following legislature.

The European Parliament had voted for the measure in 2014 but opposition by some EU Member States within the Council had prevented the measure being adopted.

This move was confirmed by the European Commission in December 2014, if agreement on the proposal could not be agreed within the EU Institutions in the following six months.

EurActiv reported in May 2015 that the Commission might withdraw the proposal later in May 2015.
