Press Release: MEPs debate how to fight human trafficking

The European Parliament's human rights subcommittee held a hearing on 16 April 2015 to discuss what the European Union could do to tackle human trafficking when dealing with other countries. Its members were joined by representatives from NGOs and other international organisations.

More than twenty million women, children and men are estimated to be victims of human trafficking worldwide.

The EU adopted a Directive on Human Trafficking in March 2011, which includes stronger rules to tackle the issue. Furthermore, a EU Strategy towards the eradication of trafficking in human beings was also adopted in 2012.
