Hungary said on 25 March 2015 that it had reached an agreement with the European Union's nuclear energy agency Euratom regarding plans for Russia to be the sole supplier of nuclear fuel to the country's Paks power plant. Under the new deal, Russia would be able to supply fuel for two new reactors at the plant in central Hungary over a ten year period. This project is part of the plan to bring Hungary and Russia politically closer, a wish shared by both governments. The European Commission still had to approve the agreement. The announcement came after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's chief of staff Janos Lazar held talks on the issue in Brussels with EU Climate and Energy Commissioner Miguel Arias Cañete. |
