The European Parliament's Environment Committee approved on 24 February 2015 a draft law to cap the production of traditional biofuels and accelerate the shift to alternative sources, such as seaweed and waste. This proposal aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions that result from the growing use of agricultural land to produce biofuel crops.

The head of this committee also received the mandate to start negotiations with the Latvian Presidency of the Council of Ministers for a possible second reading agreement.
