The Guardian reported in February 2015 on the breakaway region of Transnistria and the impact of economic recession in Russia in everyday life.

Transnistria declared itself independent from Moldova in 1992, when local separatists, backed by Russian military units, beat back the Moldovan army. Since then the territory’s survival has depended on the presence of Russian peacekeeping troops – and on subsidies from Russia's government.

The region has been seen as another potential point of fracture between Russia and West - following what happened in Ukraine - specially after Moldova vowed closer ties with the European Union.
