In response to the deteriorating situation in the eastern part of Ukraine, the EU Heads of State issued a statement on the 26 January 2015 condemning 'the killing of civilians during the indiscriminate shelling of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol on 24 January 2015. We note evidence of continued and growing support given to the separatists by Russia, which underlines Russia's responsibility. We urge Russia to condemn the separatists' actions and to implement the Minsk agreements'. A further strengthening of sanctions against Russia was threatened. The new government of Alexis Tsipras in Greece was angry with the statement, and suggested that its objections were not taken into account. Kathimerini reported on the 28 January 2015 that the new Greek government was considering whether to veto further sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine. A further Foreign Affairs Council was held on the 29 January 2015 in Brussels at which further conclusions on Ukraine were adopted. |
