The MEPs from the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee of the European Parliament said on 21 January 2015 that meat used as an ingredient in processed food should be labelled by country of origin as was already the case for bovine fresh meat.

They called on the European Commission, which published a report on the issue in late 2013, to come up with legislative proposals in order to rebuild consumer confidence in the wake of the horsemeat scandal and other food fraud cases.

This position was confirmed by a vote at the plenary on 11 February 2015.
