Men armed with automatic weapons opened fire at the offices of French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo on the 7 January 2015. Twelve people were killed, ten Charlie Hebdo staff and two police officers, and many others injured.. Speaking at the scene, French President Hollande said there was no doubt that the shooting had been a 'terrorist attack', adding that several other attempts at attacks had been thwarted in the previous weeks. He denounced an act of 'exceptional barbarism'. EU Institutions, the Council of Europe, EU Member State governments and many other countries, interests, and individual citizens condemned the attack. France raised the terror alert status to the highest level after the incident. |
