In December 2014 the European Parliament (EP) will vote on a resolution to support recognition of the State of Palestine. In doing so, the EP will follow the example set by parliaments in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain and France, as well as by Sweden, where the newly elected government became the first EU state (and 135th in the world) to recognise the State of Palestine. Similar votes were also expected in the Italian and Danish parliaments.

The vote was due to take place on the 17 December 2014. After discussion the main Political Groups in the European Parliament agreed on a text for a motion on the 16 December 2014 which said that the European Parliament 'supports in principle recognition of Palestinian statehood and the two-state solution, and believes these should go hand in hand with the development of peace talks, which should be advanced'.

The European Parliament voted on the 17 December 2014 for a Resolution which supported 'in principle recognition of Palestinian statehood and the two state solution, and believes these should go hand in hand with the development of peace talks, which should be advanced'. To support EU diplomatic efforts in the Middle East peace process, it also decided to launch a 'Parliamentarians for Peace' initiative to bring together MEPs and MPs from the Israeli and Palestinian parliaments.
