Amid tensions, Russia resumes gas deliveries to Ukraine

On 9 December 2014, Ukrainian troops announced they would cease combat operations against rebels in the eastern region of the country. The Ukrainians named it the 'Day of Silence', testing separatists' readiness to reinforce a truce agreed in September 2014 [click here for more information] which has been regularly breached, with almost daily deaths among government forces, rebels and civilians. But as night fell, Kyiv's military said troops had recorded 13 violations by rebels shelling Ukrainian positions, highlighting two artillery attacks on the airport of rebel-held Donetsk.

It had been hoped that the truce could improve prospects of a new round of peace talks in the Belarussian capital Minsk involving Russia, Ukraine and the separatists under the auspices of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

While Ukraine's military and Moscow-backed separatists struggle to cease fire on the ground, Russia resumed shipments of natural gas to Ukraine on the same day after a six-month shut-off caused by a dispute over price and debt [click here for more information].
