The Belgian parliament was scheduled to vote in December 2014 on a non-binding motion asking the government to recognise Palestine as an independent state when it sees fit. The initiative comes after four of the biggest parties agreed to back the project. The motion did not offer a deadline to the government. According to EUObserver, the Belgian government intended to wait for further developments on the international stage before taking any decision. If it eventually decided to officially recognise Palestine, the country might join a group of other EU member states in this decision, an effort seen as a way to create a new momentum for resumed talks between Israel and Palestine. |
