United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron outlined plans in a major speech on the 28 November 2014 to change rules for EU migrants going to Britain, most notably limiting their access to social welfare payments. He admitted that these changes would likely require EU treaty revisions. However, the Prime Minister stopped short of calling for a cap on new arrivals or a suggested 'emergency brake', which had caused concerns in other EU Member States. German Chancellor Angela Merkel later stated on the 1 December that she was pleased he had upheld the freedom of movement for EU workers in the unveiled plans. However, BBC News reported that Rafal Trzaskowski, Deputy Foreign Minister of Poland had said on Newsnight on the 1 December 2014 that any plan to discriminate on grounds of nationality would be a 'red line' issue for Poland. |
