According to a statement issued by the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) in November 2014, the potential for shale gas extraction in the European Union is 'uncertain' because of limited geological data on the accessibility of gas, dampening hopes that shale can one day be exploited on a significant scale on the continent.

Even so, specialists stated that there are no scientific grounds to ban fracking.
