Germany to build liquefied gas station with EU funds

EurActiv reported on 5 November 2014 that the European Commission was giving €4 million to two German companies for the construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) ferry and a fuel station in the North Sea. The project could increase the number of ships using LNG in future.

NG is considered an alternative to heavy oils, as it does not emit sulphur dioxide that pollutes waters. It also produces far less carbon and nitrogen emissions, which are greenhouse gases that warm the Earth's surface and forces the climate to change.

As of January 2015, an EU law is set to force all shipowners operating in the Baltic and the North Sea to reduce marine sulphur emissions to 0.1%. Companies started rushing to adapt their ships to the new environmental rules, or face restrictions.
