On 31 October 2014, EUObserver published an investigative article on current investment in Africa based on an investigation from the Illicit Finance Journalism Programme (IFJP), providing the example of Qalaa, a successful African investment fund.

The article shows its business model, its activity and alleged use of tax havens, as well as its connections to European authorities and institutions, including the European Investment Bank (EIB) from which it received several loans.
