Report of remarks by United Kingdom Defence Secretary Michael Fallon on the 26 October 2014. Speaking on the proposals being formulated within the UK government to reduce immigration from other EU countries Mr Fallon spoke of parts of British towns feeling 'under siege' and being 'swamped' from an influx of migrant workers. However, UK Environment Secretary, Liz Truss, admitted that the United Kingdom needed EU migrants to fill unskilled jobs in the agricultural sector. German Chancellor Angela Merkel appeared to reject the prospect of substantial change regarding EU immigration, telling the Sunday Times on the 26 October 2014: 'Germany will not tamper with the fundamental principles of free movement in the EU'. Mr Fallow later said he had misspoken when warning that some areas of the UK could be overwhelmed by immigrants without changes to European Union rules on movement. |
